Excerpts from Selma Injunction Hearing
Margaret Moore (teacher)
I heard the order to go back……. Then in almost the same breath he said we had two minutes…..and when I looked again I saw everyone roll, just a rolling surf, and something, horses and men, state troopers and posse men and I turned around and told them,…’Don’t run. You will not get hurt. And then I turned and…three troopers were standing over me.
John Lewis
Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee…I am the National Director……I have been arrested and also beaten in Dallas County…my first arrest was September 25, 1963……When we were forced back, most of the people in line knelt in prayerful manner….. members of the posse ran their horses near the marchers…. One of the posse men made his horse rear back and start pawing people in the back…..
Hosea Williams
I am Director of Political Education with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference………as we approached the Pettis Bridge we were met by state troopers…..we were given two minutes to disperse. We were attacked one minute and five seconds later….Sheriff Clark yelling Go get-em, kill’em……..a lady threw her coat over me and said she heard the sheriff say “Get the black man leading in the black suit”…. They went on peoples porches and he hit one woman who had just come out the door…they chased everyone…..these people were not in the march.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Yes. This philosophy says in substance that one must have the inner determination to resist what conscience tells him is evil…. He must not resort to violence or hatred in the process …laws can be unjust…has no alternative but to disobey the law…… but he must be willing to do it openly…with a willingness to accept the penalty….to arouse a conscience over the injustice…..of the law.
